The Apple IPAD is here, and if ever a controversial gadget that is it. We met up with Apple last week to pick up one of the few iPad can be in the wild early and have played with it since then. Already the subject of countless discussions, arguments and parody – not least because of what they do, but as what she is really capable of – there is also a reluctant expectation that if someone can make tablets extremely popular, it’s likely Apple . So, the IPAD to live up to its promise, or is this really just an oversized iPod touch too big (and expensive) for your pocket? Read the full review SlashGear after the cut.

We are a long way from the days when half of the included Apple accessories that you ever need in the box with your new device. In the IPAD, there is a USB to dock connector cable, AC adapter, which plugs directly into a wall outlet, and some sparse documentation. Most conspicuously absent is Apple’s white headphones Regulation, which will come with even the lowest iPod, though, given their poor quality, it would the first thing that we proposed have been renewed anyway.

The IPAD itself takes the design concept of a blackboard and cook it on pretty much the bare minimum. Measuring 9.56 x 7.47 x 0.50 inches and tipped the scales at 1.5 kilograms, the front is basically all glass and the back all brushed aluminum. Apple has always been controlled for reduction to ports and hardware, but this is perhaps IPAD a new extreme. Up top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, hold a discrete microphone and the POWER / LOCK key while the volume rocker and the freezing of a switch, automatic screen rotation on the right. The speakers are small and standard 30-pin dock connector including proprietary, while an ambient light sensor lurking almost invisibly under the glass fascia.

That means no USB ports, no HDMI and no memory card slot, worked well all over by Apple fans and critics since the IPAD the specifications were first confirmed. Also criticized was the approximately 1-inch-black bezel around the 9.7-inch, 1,024 x 768 capacitive touch screen, with plenty of questions, why has Apple not opt for an Edge-to-edge display. The answer – as any slate-format tablet user has said, and there is evidently clear when in fact the IPAD in your hands – is that it gives you a place to really grab and hold the IPAD without accidentally fingers touch of the screen.

As for the screen itself, it is surprisingly bright and rich colors. We are the manufacturer ratcheting the brightness defaults to 100 percent, almost certainly on a glowing first impression when first turned on, but the IPAD is actually represented only 50 percent and is still abundant. It is also ideal for collaborative exchange thanks to Apple’s use of an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel, over which viewpoint to support up to 178-degrees. In practice, the graphics are slightly askance watchable even when looking at the IPAD.

Durability is an obvious concern, although the glass display feels tough and resistant to scratches. It also has an oleophobic coating, such as the iPhone, the fingerprints that collect, although often just as good as anyone touched glass, they can be easily wiped means. Nevertheless, the sheer size of the IPAD about the iPhone is it’s a little difficult to quickly wipe it on your sleeve. The rest of the aluminum case seems dressed similarly robust, but it is so adorable slender and well developed, could prove that even the mildest scratches disappointing. Because there is no case to the field – not even a cheap fabric sleeve so many gadgets are packed for shipping – we think most of their owners IPAD tablet either Apple or treat the case as a third-party.

Power on, and experience who will be immediately familiar iPhone or iPod touch was used. The Home Screen is set in the usual grid of icons that can with eleven possible slices that flipped between a finger-swipe, and four fixed icons at the bottom. It seems a missed opportunity not to have re-examined when the desktop paradigm confronted with a new, larger display, we can not help but think that Dashboard widgets style would look good (and offer practical information at a glance) on the IPAD’s Home Screen.

However, you can not have the speed, the navigation is done with complaining. Apple has been on the brittle IPAD hardware specifications, only confirming that it uses its own custom chipset with a 1GHz A4 PowerVR SGX GPU. The latter is of the same family, certainly, as in the latest generation iPhone 3G and iPod touch found, but without specific model numbers, it is unclear whether the IPAD is the same or improved graphics performance packs. Shake geeky away our need for hard facts and instead look at how the IPAD actually holds up to everyday use, though, and there is little to disappoint. Home Screen slices with zero lag flip open apps at once and pop-up menus – the OS 3.2, the iPhone is currently exclusive to the IPAD uses, instead of commuting increased between settings and menu screens – to jump at your fingertips. There is no waiting around, tapping is done on an app and then counting the seconds before it for use as is often found on low-powered netbooks. Clearly, this is not a small part to the lack of multitasking – more on that later – this means the processor is really only ever asked to do one thing at a time.

Connectivity, meanwhile includes WiFi b / g / n and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR standard. The latter supports the A2DP profile for the use of wireless stereo headphones or speakers, together with certain HID profiles, you can, for example, a Bluetooth keyboard, Apple’s own, but not a Bluetooth mouse. In late April, will select iPad also offer integrated 3G connectivity, for use on AT & T network in the U.S.. A $ 130 option on the standard $ 499, $ 599 or $ 699 IPAD price (for the 16GB, 32GB or 64GB models), and the 3G chip also comes with A-GPS support. Unlike an iPhone 3G contract in the U.S., however, which requires a two-year contract with AT & T, Apple has negotiated a more flexible data plan. Contract-free, it would be a selection of 250MB of data allowance per month for $ 14.99 or unlimited data (with of course a fair use policy) for $ 29.99. Best of all, these two from the IPAD itself, rather than demanding to speak with AT & T: you can choose, 3G, manages to allow for a month and then disable it for the next.

Twelve applications are preinstalled on the IPAD and at first glance there is nothing strange to the familiar Apple. Calendar, contacts, notes, maps, videos, YouTube, iTunes, App Store, Safari, Mail, Photos, and iPod all make an appearance, and as usual you can reorder icons on the home screen by tapping and holding. Fortunately, some have none IPAD gone without update for the iPhone OS 3.2, especially the maximum advantage of the screen real estate on offer.

A good example is Mail, which is now more like a desktop e-mail client as the iPhone version. The screen is divided into two columns, with the familiar list of e-mails (advertisements read status, sender, date / time, theme, a short excerpt from the body and whether it is an annex) on the left side and a preview window the right. Attachments such as photos are displayed in-line with the open message, and a number of symbols in the upper right side you can delete or reply to a message or a blank start. As on the iPhone, tap a name opens contextual options on how to answer them or viewing their contact entry, but you can also easily save attachments in the same way, which are automatically organized by file type. Images, for example, are slotted into the gallery.

In fact, the integration between the mail client and other applications on the IPAD is particularly smooth. If one or more of the tracks from the newly offered iWork suite – Pages, Numbers or Keynote, for documents, spreadsheets or presentations, and – then IPAD can automatically convert, say, Microsoft Word files, the page format. We had mixed results with conversion, usually depending on the complexity of the formatting in the original file, which opened most simple documents without problems, though. From the side, now it is just a file – either on the newly created IPAD, or send you to which you’ve been by e-mail and edited – by mail, including conversion to Word format more often on the way .

As on the iPhone supports Microsoft Exchange Mail, MobileMe, Gmail, and Yahoo! Mail and AOL accounts with easy setup wizard. You can also manually add the POP / IMAP account separately. Unfortunately, only one Exchange account to be used at a time, which means you can not tell you, your company Exchange message via push by Google to come with push mail messages, as the latter uses an Exchange gateway. Given how easy the mail app makes prospects even hectic e-mail accounts, we found that the more a disappointment than it is on Apple’s smartphone.

iPhone e-mail responses can usually only briefly, is the “Sent from my iPhone” footer abbreviation for “input via an on-screen phone keyboard is not conducive to long messages.” We were interested to see, then, like Apple’s IPAD screen “could keep on board. It is a mixed bag, to be fair, in portrait mode, the keys are quite narrow – but still usable – and therefore better suited to either pick two fingers or holding the IPAD with one hand and stabbing with the other. Landscape mode is easier if touch-typists will miss obviously the tactile feedback of a real keyboard. The experience would be much worse without the car well appreciated Apple correction, which – like the iPhone before it suggests – Words corrected typos automatically and slots in the usual punctuation, learning new words as it goes along. For longer periods of typing, if we would for IPAD keyboard either Apple’s Dock that is more to achieve on a scale with the regular desktop ‘board, or a Bluetooth option. No USB connection means no connectivity, wired keyboard, and it is worth noting that no one in either plug a printer, you should have a printed copy of something.

If e-mail is new to the streamlined IPAD, then takes to surf the Internet a real leap over the already decent mobile safari experience. The IPAD browser is fast, responsive and frankly, to experience one of the best aspects of the whole tablet. Multi-Touch gestures like pinch zoom are supported, along with smart rendering – automatically scales the columns of text or photos will fit on the screen – and a satisfying lick of speed. Rotate from portrait to landscape and it is to change one moment, and in fact the IPAD is to flip all four positions, flip end-over-end of the table something to show to the person sitting for example, and they will see it the correct orientation.

As has been well rehearsed in advance of the market is missing, on the Safari IPAD Flash support for streaming video and animation, and – given Apple have failed to approve it for all three generations of iPhone – it does not look likely to arrive in the foreseeable future , if at all. Similarly frustrating is the absence of tabbed browsing, something that might make sense on a smaller screen device, but less on the IPAD. Instead, you must press the button and window from one side of the image (or tap the X to anyone who choose to close it). The browser home screen, on which – like Safari on the desktop – echoes, you shortcuts to frequently visited Web sites Pin layout.

What you get instead is the Flash support HTML5, and if you are not sure what that means then you’re not alone. Currently in Working Draft status, takes the core HTML5 HTML language that the Web is written, and – boiled, for our purposes here – leads to new, standardized audio and video functionality. This means that Web sites can deliver compatible with HTML5 streaming audio and video to IPAD’s mobile Safari browser, rather indistinguishable from their Flash equivalents from the perspective of the user. Of course it is, sites that support the new language, HTML5 at a disadvantage compared to the semi-ubiquitous Flash. Apple’s continued dominance and success, not only those suspected of IPAD but also the next generation iPhone, however, are doing wonders in travel content provider, at least consider HTML5, but right now there are still plenty of empty holes in Web sites.

Maps should be exactly like Google Maps on a desktop computer feel – stretched the same experience on a larger display – but there is something much more intuitive about the possibility of the IPAD lay in your lap and pore over, as if it was a paper map. There is much less than swiping the iPhone version, just because you see more of the map at any time. Standard, satellite and terrain mapping are available, along with Google Street View (which can be navigated with the integrated digital compass), and all the usual search functions are available. Since A-GPS will be the first 3G + WiFi IPAD models later in the month in which you use the WiFi-only iPad WiFi triangulation to determine its position, just like the first generation iPhone. We can not help but wish Apple had included a GPS chip in every model, even though the basic triangulation works quite well (more in urban environments, anyway).

Media consumption is definitely high on the IPAD divided the list of priorities, with the different types of content in photos, videos and iPod. Everyone uses the same initial grid layout for surfing on the content: photos into different albums will be presented as a stack of photos on the tap, you can open or pinch-zoom, the pictures, while there in the iPod and Videos it Thumbnails album art or DVD covers. A somewhat curious omission is Cover Flow, sweeping through which we have made would have thought ideal for the purposes of IPAD’s expansive touch screen. However, you can browse music by playlist, genre, genius mix or artist / album, while video content in movies, TV shows, music videos and much more is split.

Like iPhoto on OS X, photos on the IPAD has the same options: events, faces and places. You can use images from the whereabouts of her admission to organize – including the ad on a card – or face recognition, to pick out only those recordings in which certain persons function. Slideshows are easy to create – with an optional audio track completely – and Apple see the IPAD be used as a digital photo frame, in fact, the optional keyboard IPAD Dock to activate a shortcut key that mode.

In the iPod app, everything from your desktop iTunes – including playlists, Genius playlists and mixes and all content itself – across synchronized with the same kind of split-screen interface. Just like on an iPod touch, once you begin to play an album of the screen with the appropriate cover, which you can tap to call the tracklist is filled. Audio playback through the small, built-in speaker is surprisingly strong, although expected, is lacking any real bass or mid / high-definition. Most of the time but we plugged in some headphones (or hook a pair of Bluetooth headphones), the sound was Hiss-free and well balanced. Various EQ presets are available, although there is no user customization. Supported file types include AAC (including DRM tracks from the iTunes Store, which also directly from the IPAD), MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV, although we can imagine the lack of lossless FLAC me, perhaps a frustration to some.

Switch to video, meanwhile, and the IPAD, the display really alive. Where is the iPod functionality probably not benefit particularly from the larger screen, it is a tangible benefit with all the extra inches (and scores) beyond that, say, an iPod touch. The IPAD missed true 720p HD (1280 x 720) resolution, which content in this format – have bought such as HD movies from iTunes, means – are sandwiched above and below with black bars. Alternatively, you can tap the screen once to enlarge, lose not only the bars, but also a piece of the action on every page. Just like the latest version of QuickTime on OS X, float controls for playback on video, if necessary, suppression after a period of inactivity, and chapter skips, you can scrub through the entire clip on the timeline at the top.

Video support for MPEG-4, M-JPEG and H.264 content with up to 720p 30fps, and if you stump for Apple’s $ 29 IPAD Dock Connector to VGA adapter, you can output 1024 x 768 images on your desktop monitor (or a flat-panel display) instead. Unfortunately, there is no video-editing functionality that a shame, because whittling down home movies and clips thrown together with basic titles and transitions, appeared ideal for the IPAD. We would prefer an iMovie-style video editing suite, as iWork, to be honest.

Apple’s step into the ebook market high waves in the sector ahead of the IPAD was officially announced, so we had high hopes for the iBooks App. In contrast to the current popular ebook reader – such as the Kindle from Amazon or Barnes & Noble’s Nook – the IPAD course has a regular LCD display instead of an e-paper screen. The advantage is support for color graphics and video, is in the e-Paper currently only monochrome and suffers from too slow a refresh rate to be video. As there are ereader manufacturer, but are the possible disadvantages in the long battery life and comfort in reading, E-Ink panels, where non-backlit, are more comfortable on the eyes than a backlit LCD screen.

In practice, while can be e-paper display of choice for hardcore readers, we can clearly see the screen to win the IPAD to all others. Apple iBooks have given their own particular brightness control, you can use the backlight and not blindly sound when you are in bed and read you think it is too early to say whether the longer-term experience is of reading on the IPAD left us with sore eyes . Still, the ability to paint pictures and videos inside of ebooks – embedded view as in Winnie the Pooh story on the tray biased – probably a big hit with casual readers will be, as well as the skillful integration of touch screen. Page transition animations – such as the turning sheet exactly to your finger – feel more natural, and the ability to tap a word and either bookmark, get the dictionary definition, or even look in Google or Wikipedia are another example of how well integrated into the entire ecosystem is IPAD.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of Apple’s iBooks experience still lags behind that of the Kindle in a way. Not least is the selection of titles to offer: There is currently some 60,000 eBooks in the iBookstore, typically with prices ranging from $ 9.99 to $ 14.99. As with Amazon you can browse a summary online or download a sample with a few teaser chapters, but in contrast to established retailers, the IPAD is the only place you actually consume, you can guarantee your content iBooks. Apple have an OS X app ereader release and yet they have an iPhone or iPod touch version (ironically, perhaps Amazon, all three, along with a newly announced IPAD version), though we imagine it would rather have a question of time when behind this tendency.

Even if the IPAD can compare the 1.5 pound weight well into a full-size notebooks is much heavier than a dedicated eReader like the Kindle, this is generally a two-handed reading experience, and probably not something you want to keep had on your head while lying on his back in bed. Speaking of which, Apple screen hold switch is very handy to lock the orientation of the page, it means you will not have eBook even if you flip one side of the IPAD resting on the pillow. Something Amazon could learn from iBooks, now is the native app’s ePub support (as long as they DRM are free), although you’ll order it load as the format on an iTunes sync not of those as viable accepts email attachments and you can not save them directly from websites.

Apple’s biggest weapon, however, the App Store, already the most popular software distribution system for current smartphones and now gradually filling with a tablet-happy title. A major reason for the choice OS for the iPhone IPAD rather than, say, a stripped down version of OS X was the wealth of existing third-party software for the platform to reckon Apple iPhone IPAD 150,000 titles will be compatible. Since the iPhone display is working with 480 x 320 resolution, but regular applications are centered in the display’s IPAD, swimming in a sea of black. Apple has blurred a workaround, which zooms in the end add the app twice the size – and makes it a little, but functionally perfect – but they are encouraging developers to bring new platform with their own versions.

This is something developers have not only to do slowly. Apple have said that it is capable of more than 1,000 titles, the IPAD’s native resolution is available at the start date (although previous leaks have made it closer to 1300 +), to the existing applications made revised to take advantage of the extra pixels together with a completely new software. The prices for these new versions differ, and some companies are giving away free IPAD-specific enhancements for those who bought iPhone versions, while others are distributed free of charge. But many are priced higher than their counterparts iPhone homescreen and filling of these eleven discs was a more expensive task than before.

However, there is no doubt that to make the new homes – possibly – a much more immersive experience. Gaming in particular benefit also from the IPAD’s larger display with racing titles cream making good progress thanks to the 1GHz CPU, while the art is to use a lot more apps. The barrage of press releases IPAD app we saw in the last seven days leave no doubt that the App Store is not likely to lose its diversity in the foreseeable future.

Of course, the functionality use is nothing in the world, if your device lacks stamina and manage to combine the long life battery with ease, the specter of rival tablets in recent years. Apple quotes 10 hours period from IPAD’s non-user replaceable battery, but early visitors usually have the slate is found in a position by more than an hour or two. It is too early to make in our time with the IPAD for us to make this call, we will be re battery life when they put through their paces a little longer.

So, it looks good, it takes centuries, and there are plenty of software suitable for him, “What is love not on the IPAD? Apple’s new products are probably one of the most criticized in the market, and it is safe to say that there are aspects in which they lack. Apart from the lack of flash in the browser – which is partly done through the standalone app YouTube, and support for HTML5 – perhaps the biggest frustration is the lack of a webcam and a native instant messaging client. The IPAD unit makes such a good media consumption, it would be great to be able to share that with a sustained IM app (like iChat on Apple’s OS X experience). Without the webcam also, it means there is no provision for video calls, either through Skype or other platforms, despite the IPAD with the ideal form factor for spontaneous video conferencing.

Running a close second is the lack of multitasking, even with the IPAD lived for a while, we are not at all sure how well it would work, even on this larger display. Yes, running ability, third-party media applications – such as Pandora or Spotify – be nice in the background, but generally would be two apps Multitasking means on the screen at the same time, and that would be such a fundamental change requiring the iPhone OS that it might end up feeling more like OS X. To win you’d functionality, yes, but you would lose some usability in the process. However, it means that while third-party IM applications – such as AOL – offer text-based messaging, ie the lack of multitasking support the experience is not as elegant as it could be so easy.

Of course there are other fundamental questions, which to a certain degree of effect all Apple products. How the iPhone and the iPod, it is a closed ecosystem, Apple controls the hardware – you rely on them to change the battery, even – and the software controlling both the iPhone OS on the device and the third party titles available by the loaded App Store. Even if you provide content, which makes life with Apple’s bouncer by the party in the lashings of the DRM are mean, it can be expensive when you consider wasteful rate jumps to the Apple ship. Leave applications purchased, downloaded songs and videos, and now – with the introduction of iBookstore – purchased ebooks.

To be fair, not just one view on Apple’s customers is limited. There are many who say we have spent Kindle owners that have considerable amounts of Amazon ebooks, and who is not legally be able to read it on something other than the company’s hardware or software. Still, it’s something to keep in mind: the flip side, perhaps, dominated by such a “safe” and unchallenging device.

We have a feeling though, that does not prevent such a concern that the IPAD by a sales success. Although pre-orders were apparently wildly successful, this is a device that is truly alive when you pick it up and touch: when people start to walk into the Apple Stores and the sense of IPAD for themselves, that’s when the real sales rush to start is likely. The iPhone already showed a legion of users, that just because a phone is smart, they did not have a degree, must make the most of it. The IPAD, meanwhile, involve compromise, like his siblings, cellular, but in return offers the users, that borders on the magical. Cynics had a field day with repeated use Steve Jobs’ “Magic” in the IPAD Keynote, and while we might not go quite that far, what would we say that there is a joined-up’s is incredibly experience. Apple had the core elements of the tablet / touch made paradigm and work them smoothly, and when the then underwhelming sounds you need to remember that there is something Tablet PCs – although to reach fought a few niches and vertical success – during the past decade’s have .

Yes, there is a feeling that in the process, they have simply what they do not have the same standard Polish left – whether it’s Flash, multitasking or a webcam. This is a device of the first generation to look though, how long it taken Apple to deliver on some of the common phone functionality into their three-generations-old mobile platform. They are perhaps not the way they do it – is switched off until the user experience, the market, or the combination of both is true – but millions of happy iPhone owners are proof that it is quite an audience for it.
For all, then? Of course not, but that’s a pretty unrealistic criteria for success. Ask instead if Apple in providing the elusive middle machine failed to get the thing in the slots tricky niche between smartphones and notebook. Remember also that such a niche is not necessarily so small that accommodate only one product – this is not a case of “the IPAD path or the road” – but rather a meeting core criteria: Did you select single it together and put it in your pocket when you go, do it from room to room, carry with you around the house? For some, this device is a netbook for the others, there is no such device at all. It is not perfect, but the Apple IPAD ensure that the criteria for us.
